OCTOBER COUNTRY IS THE HOME OF THE ORIGINAL RAG GARLAND LOOM!

Rag Garland Loom

Rag Garland is the perfect Country Cottage Primitive Accent! Whether you're decorating a Yule-tide tree or trimming out a Primitive Creation, it is still work to make rag garland by hand. Until Now! This wooden loom uses a simple dual cord technique that allows you to slip strand after strand of stripped fabric (cotton, muslin, homespun, flannel), yarn, raffia, beads, and more over or under the cords to make yards and yards of beautiful Rag Garland. Quickly and efficiently. I've used this loom to create rag garland for over twenty years. Now we are making it available to other crafty folk! Yep! I'm thinking that means you!

Barefoot Primitives

The BAREFOOT PRIMITIVE is a wood and canvas creation. Features include: Hand Sculpted Wood Hands and Gnarly Feet complete with finger nails and toe nails. Most creations have wood ears and noses! We are delighted with the depth and character that the wood sculpture adds to each unique creation.

Each Barefoot Primitive creation is hand crafted by me from heavy canvas. The dolls are hand painted, distressed and stiffened or grunged. I use cotton homespun, wool and other vintage fabrics and laces whenever possible in the creation of the clothes. Some of the clothing is fashioned from canvas, hop-sacking or muslins with hand painted or hand stitched designs. 100% wool, cotton, jute and even steel wool is used to craft hair, beards and mustaches. Vintage buttons, pins, odd pieces of costume jewelry are used as accents here and there. Some creations have hand-made clay or wood buttons. Each piece is distressed or antiqued depending on the look we were going for at the time of creation. Most of these characters are rusty, crusty and dusty!

Each doll comes with a hand crafted companion piece. Frequently I use what I call Pillow Dolls (lightly stuffed and sculpted canvas creations) or Flat Dolls or Stick Dolls (make-do items mounted on Bobbins, spools, sticks). The companion pieces are as unique as the doll they accompany.

The Barefoot Primitives are truly One-of-a-Kind pieces. No two are alike nor will they be duplicated. It is simply too much fun making each one different! All Giant Barefoot Primitives are signed, dated, and numbered and each one is accompanied by a toe tag (distressed cargo tag) that bears the name, number and date of the piece as well as my signature. The tags are usually hand painted with a likeness of the piece or something that corresponds to the theme of the piece like a flag for Patriotic Americana pieces.

The Giant Barefoot Prims range in size from three feet to over four feet tall. All seasons are represented among the Barefoot Prims including Uncle Sam, Liberty, Santa, Witches, Punkin'heads, Crows, Rabbits, Black Americana and other folksy characters. They come in other varieties and sizes, too. The Blockhead Prims are medium in size and well... a bit odd, but we love 'em. We have an adorable collection of wire body Posable Prims to offer with tiny hands and feet. Some are riding crows and cats... some are just sittin' around looking prissy. Ha!

Busts and Shelf Sitters

This line of PRIMITIVE BUSTS AND SHELF SITTERS are fashioned from hand-painted canvas mounted on a wood base. Of a generous size they include a large variety of characters like: the ever popular Uncle Sam and Liberty, Americana and Black Americana characters, Leprechauns, Raggedy, Weird and Wacky Witches, Good Ol' Santa and occasionally a critter.

All Busts and Shelf Sitters will sit on a shelf as shallow as six inches and work well as a centerpiece or mantle-piece. They are about 15 inches wide and 18 to 20 or more inches tall (depending on the hat they wear.) The busts have hand-sculpted wood features (ears and noses). Some of them like the Weird Sister Witch have soft sculpted features and arms and wood hands. Hair is fashioned from a variety of mediums including wool, cotton, steel wool and even springs. A variety of items are used for trim-out and may include rusty tin pieces, vintage or hand-made buttons and keys. Each piece is distressed or antiqued depending on the look we were going for at the time of creation. Like most October Country Creations -- no two pieces are alike.

The bottom of the base is finished off with felt and vintage upholstery tacks. Most busts are trimmed with a tag of some sort which usually bears the name of the piece, date of creation and my signature.

Posable Prims

POSABLE PRIMS are a spin-off of our Large Barefoot Prims. The Posable Prims are a hugely popular item and a favorite project in the studio of October Country. They can be and are created in such wondrous variety. Each one has a distinct personality. Again, no two are alike.

Features include: Hand sculpted wood hands and gnarly bare feet complete with finger nails and toe nails. Most posables have hand-sculpted wood heads with one of a kind hand formed noses! The armature is a custom combination of wood and wire, allowing for flexibility. They vary a bit, depending on hats, heads and length of leg but are generally 20 to 25 inches long give or take an inch or two.

We have these miniature Barefoot Prims sitting in trees, on shelves and mini benches, hanging around on flag poles, and riding a variety of critters (cats, rabbits, crows). We are delighted with the depth and character that the wood sculpture adds to each unique creation. Each piece is distressed or antiqued depending on the look we are going for at the time of creation. Posable Prims are dressed in recycled, vintage fabrics, denim and wool whenever possible and trimmed with old buttons, lace, fur, rusty tin, twigs, feathers and hand-made companion pieces. Lots of hand-stitching! Very detailed!

Among the Posables, you'll find Uncle Sam, Liberty, Santa, Leprechauns, Punkin'heads, Witches, Black Americana, assorted Critters and more.

Bottle-Do Creations

BOTTLE-DO PRIMS are one of the fun items we designed using a recycled bottle as a base for the doll. Bottle-Do creations are fun and folksy, guaranteed to brighten up any dull corner, shelf or table with their quirky personality. They are small in stature but long on detail.

Features include: Hand-sculpted wood heads with one of a kind hand formed noses! Hand-sculpted, wood, mitten-like hands. And posable arms. Each piece is distressed or antiqued depending on the look we were going for at the time of creation. Most Bottle-Do Prims have hand-painted canvas bodies and are often dressed in a variety of recycled, vintage textiles including wool and denim, homespun and muslin. Lots of hand-stitching! They are trimmed with vintage buttons, lace, wool, rusty tin, and hand-made companion pieces. They range from 12 to 15 inches tall.

Bottle-Do Prims feature Leprechauns and Santa, Witches and Punkinheads and assorted other folksy characters and critters.

Soft Sculpture

POPPETS: These lovelies or perhaps grumpies is a better term -- are about as cuddly as October Country creations get. You've heard that old adage -- so ugly it's cute? Well, here ya go then.

This is October Country's version of an old fashion Church Dolly. 'Member those? We have Prayer Poppets, Blessings Poppets, Witch Poppets, Santa Poppets and more.

Poppets are dressed in cotton homespun or wool and occasionally vintage or recycled textiles. Some have needle-felted wool hair or beards. The body is fashioned from a soft open weave canvas, paint stained and grunged. Gently stuffed. The word Poppet is crudely embroidered on the back side of the doll. The nose and pouty mouth are pinch sewn. The eyes are embroidered. Finally, the arms and legs are fashioned from hand sculpted, gently distressed, painted wood and attached (sewn) button style to the body. Poppets are trimmed in various ways. For instance, Blessings Poppets come with a tag that can be personalized for gift-giving.

Make-Do Creations

MAKE-DO PRIMS: Yep, we have them. Lots of them. All sizes and shapes. Mostly because we love recycling or re-purposing things that have been discarded by others. Isn't that a pleasant way to say -- trash to treasure? Ha!

Like the Bottle-Do Prims are made with recycled bottles as a base, October Country Make-Do creations are made with old spindles, bobbins, springs, candle sticks and well, just about anything we find laying around that might serve some purpose.

SPINDLE-DO PRIMS are created with old chair spindles, textile bobbins and spools, candle sticks and so on. among these you'll find running rabbits, cats, and a variety of characters, including: Santa, Snowmen, Witches, Punkin'heads, Uncle Sam and Liberty, plus crows, bats, cats, bunnies. Our newest addition to this group are the Gothic Ragheads - you gotta see 'em.

SPRING-DO PRIMS use a vintage, rusty spring as a base. Here also you will find a vast array of characters and critters, including sunflowers and crows.

I could go on and on... Suffice it to say -- there's just no telling what you'll find here.

Fixins and Tags

Clever Bowl FIXINS AND TAGS are part of the prim culture these days. Here you will find an assortment of primitive tags and smaller one of a kind ornament-size creations.

Primitive Stitches

PRIMITIVE STITCHES: What else here but a variety of items from penny rugs and penny patch wall decor to small quilts, red-work and black-work embroidery and appliqué creations to whatever else I pick up and put a needle to. You'll find mock-up pieces available here most of the time. These are the pieces I use to work out designs and create patterns -- I simply can't keep them all!

Primitive Pattern Index
